Say you're a member of a group and this group is being applauded by everyone else. Does it seem smug to stand there without clapping and just absorb all the applause; or does it seem conceited to clap when you are in the group yourself? Not that there's a right answer. I'm just wondering which is better/worse.

To eliminate the problem, proudly turn to your colleagues and applaude loudly with enthusiasm. Your applause demonstrates your gratitude for their work and assistance and your pride at their success.

I think it's ok to applaud - you are applauding the other members of your group, applauding those who are applauding you, and yes, even applauding yourself. Why are we so hesitant to give ourselves some much needed pats on the back?

Just stand there and look happy. But I've never been in that situation....In old news reels I've seen, Stalin used to clap a little, for himself.
