The idea is that if you splash gasoline into your eyes, you use the milk (preferably whole milk) to wash the gasoline away. I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is true. Also, what is the chemical basis for this advice?

Well if I was on a desert island and milk was all I had, I would do it without a second thought. At least the milk is water-based.

But beyond that I’d say no. Flushing with ample amounts of fresh clean water is an almost universally used direction to treat eye exposure. Milk hardly fits the bill.
