It happened to me and it was that the distributor cap was loose and kept popping off. It could be dirty spark plugs. The D cap is the plug in the middle of the spark plugs.

It would have helped if you would have provided make, model, year, and engine size. From your question, it sounds like it cranks but won't start. Engine running failure is quite often the fuel pump. However, it is an expensive fix if is an in the tank pump and should be properly diagnosed. You also could have lost the timing belt if so equiped. Timing chains also fail but much more seldom. If you car has a crank sensor it could have failed. If your car has an ignition module, it could have failed. A car needs proper valve timing, properly timed spark for ignition, and proper air fuel ratio to start and run. I usually check valve timing first on a timing belt motor by pulling off one or more of the timing belt covers. You don't want to keep cranking over a timing belt motor if the belt is broke because you can do additional damage. However, the damage has probably already been done if this is the case. After that I see if it has spark, and then I'll loook for fuel. It is fairly easy to diagnose a complete no start if you know what you are doing and have the proper training and tools. For a layman to do it is usually a lot of wasted time and parts.
Good luck

If the car turns over it could be the ignition module. If it's an n older GM with the HEI distributor make sure there is adequate electrical silicone grease between the module and distributor housing. With the brand make model I don't have much to go on. If its an older car with a carburetor be sure you have fuel pressure (10-12 lbs.) at the carb. Or in a pinch have come one put the disconnected fuel line into a clear soda bottle. You, crank the motor 1/2 of a revolution. if the bottle is half-full your mechanical fuel pump is working properly. Make sure your coil wire has no electoral Resistance of over 8000, Ohm's and is plugged solidly into the distributor.

well, your question is a little vague, first I would need to know if the car cranks or not, I think you might need to resubmit your question. List everything that is going on, because if I think what it is, is that if you were driving and the car just stop working as you were driving, it sounds like your fuel pump went.

dude!! its not easy to tell wats wrong with it at all!!! there are hundreds of posibilities from smallest parts like a wire to big parts like the whole engine!!
anyway it happed to my sometime ago...the problem with my car was that the piston rings were cracked and the pistons where getting stuck in it...that was pretty bad and i ended up changing the whole engine and paying **** load of money for a cheapass car!!
but in ur case as i told u it can be very small thing for e.g. a piece of dirt has blocked the fuel pipes or somthin went into ur injectors(if ur car has injectors)
all u can do is to take it to a garage that u trust and ask them wat is wrong !! bt make sure u trust them cuz then they cud end up changing ur whole car without fixing the problem and charging u for it!!

Well I just had the same thing happen to me, The way my problem was solved was that I had a good tune-up and an oil change. Change spark plugs and wires. That worked for me.

fuel (If not empty, blockage in fuel line) or electrical.

If it cranks fine when you try to turn it on check cable to ignition coil (or fuel lines, carb/injection)

If it won't crank, check cable to starter and other cables.

If it jump starts, alternator may have died: you can start but not run it long, nor charge battery enough to restart on its own.

Hello!

The Problem: The fuel pump! The fuel pump is shot! This is not good at all. The fuel pump needs to be replaced in order for your car to start again! Good Luck!
