I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The left-click button on the
"mouse" pressure pad (built in to keyboard) is having problems.
Just tapping it doesn't usually work. I have to press it down hard
and rock it around like its connection is messed up. What can I
do? Is there a way to assign another key to take over the
functions of this button temporarily?

I've noticed if you tap the button more on the right edge - it has more tendency to work. Find the right spot.

You also can try getting a little notebook mouse for a couple of dollars (big lots had them for $3, I think)......

Sounds like the micro switch has died so the only repair is to change out the unit (touch-pad complete) to make sure it is the switch and not just some thing stuck under it go to the mouse properties and swap the button clicks over then if the same button is at fault you know it is definitely the mechanical and not electrical where the problem is then see if you can use compressed air to blow under the button to see if that will do anything if not my first suggestion is the answer
