We have rec'd a collection bill in the mail of a debt that we do not owe and we never have owed. The company we are suppose to owe says they have never had a debt against us. So what do you do when this happens. This has happened before and we tried to reason with the collection company and all they want is us to pay a debt we don't owe. This certain company we have never ever had an account with. What is my options and what can they do to us, if anything????

Write back with a statement:

" I dispute the validity of this debt. You must provide written proof of this debt within xx days in order to validate this debt, othewise it will be assumed that your attempt to collect this amount is in violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act."

Then go on to tell them that they may be liable for civil and criminal penalties if they pursue the debt. If they do (and I doubt that they will), then hire a lawyer and suck the life out of them.

You need to obtain a statement from the company you supposedly owe the money to stating you do NOT have an account with them and you do NOT owe them any money. Submit a copy of this (keep a copy for you just in case) to the collection agency and then they will clear it all up.

Get copies of your credit reports and find out where these debts are coming from.
If you have been a victim of identity theft, that would explain it. You can fight this, but you need to find out asap.
