Yes he did. He served one term due to working himself to the point of illness. During his administration he signed a treaty finalizing the northern border of the US, Admitted Texas into the Union, and won a war that is responsible for California, Nevada, Utah and parts of Oklahoma, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico(I say partly for the last two becasue the rest of the territory for the 2 states was purchased after the war.
