Consider the theme of Harry Potter, what the stories are all about: a kid who has no respect in the real world but is highly respected in the magic world because of his secret history and that he has unexplored magical abilities. In all the books, he goes from being unconfident to confident and ends up saving the world. This is what everyone wants to believe of themselves: that they, too, can overcome adversity and earn respect when others discover their unique talents -- all they need is confidence. It's fantasy and Harry Potter books fulfill this desire.

In fact, this formula was recently discussed in the Wall Street Journal about the new Disney shows on television such as Hannah Montana.

But this doesn't necessarily make a good story. While that is the theme of Harry Potter, it isn't the theme of every story and I think that is why Harry Potter succeeds among that age group. Because on top of that theme, the story is simply entertaining. The scene structure and conflict the characters must be face is run to read about.

So, I believe that what makes a good story is that it is a metaphor for life that is entertaining to read.

Well, for one, the uniqueness of the story. So many authors write about the same subjects, but the only problem about that is that they fail to make it stand out. So when thinking of a plot, try to come up with something unique, or a way to make something that's already been done seem unique.

Also, a good story has to have believeable characters. No matter how great a character is, he or she should have several weakenesses. The heroine should never be perfect, because flaws are interesting. Opposite to that, the villain should never be fully flawed. They have to have some aspects to them that make them relateable.

Good luck.

Some things are basic - conflict, action, compressed time.

Some will tell you there are only seven plot devices, along the lines of "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back."

I think, fundamentally, we need to relate to the main character. For Harry Potter, we all know the pains of growing up and the doubt, also we'd all like to believe that we are somehow special.

Romance novels thrive because we are all looking for "true love", action stories thrive because we all want to be heroes, fantasy novels thrive because we all want to be special. Even spy novels feed on our paranoia!

All good stories will have elements of "self-doubt yet bravely going on."

I think the beginning of a story is very important. I'm more interested in ready something juicy in the beginning of a story, rather than some boring setting.

A story that everyone can relate to or wish they had that life the main character live and does. Everyone need a hero they believe in.

Anything really.
But be kinda careful if you are a first time writer to have an audience picked out first.
Audience choice is important to languistic content and overall composition of the piece.
Other then that anything goes.

A good plot and exciting characters make a good story. Also new and different storylines also make a good story.
