Guess you're a non-smoker. It's the perfect size for a Zippo type of petrol lighter. In the Old West having a source of fire was often important, so the pocket is designed to keep it safe and prevent it falling out due the motion of a galloping horse. It gets cold in the desert in the mid-West, and if you can't light a fire then you die.

Definitely for Condoms.
Why?
While you are wearing the jeans you can't take out anything from that pocket and interestingly whenever you need a condom you are not wearing the jeans.

I put my notes in there when I go for a drink. Just fold 'em up. No matter how p*ssed you get, they'll never fall out! When I put on a clean pair of jeans, most often than not, I find a fiver or a tenner and sometimes twenty quid! Bonus!!!!!

Was originally a watch pocket, when men carried watches around on long chains. It's still there just because of tradition....carry anything in there you like.

For stuffing in things that you can never get back out.
Good for hiding things you don't want anyone to see, they'll probably end up being soaked to pieces in the machine washer anyway.
