They make good wages and fringe such as lodging aboard the ship and good food. The captain isn't always the highest paid man. Can't speak for the big yachts, but on the Great Lakes freighters the Chief (engineer) is often paid more than the captain. I believe it was around 100K US.

Well, first off, the minimum size of a super yacht, is generally regarded as 148ft, a mega yacht, needs to be above 328 feet to qualify, so when you are talking a hundred foot yacht, it dosent come into any of these catagories. Its just a simple private yacht, Regarding your question though, its entierly up to an owner what they want to pay their captain, but wealthy people, tend to be wealthy, because they are sensible with their money. They may well pay a good captain, enough, so that he wont leave, but they are not going to pay too much, because if they do that, within a few years, he wont need to work for them. I worked for P&O along with a third officer who during winter, would work on super yachts in the carribean, he told me, that while he made less money as captain there, than he did as third officer with P&O, he loved doing the job, and said that for the majority of the time, the owner wasnt aboard, and he just spent his days, enjoying the yacht as if he owned it.

a friend of the family was a capt on a yacht that was about 160ft(not sure if this makes it a mega or not). He made about 150K a year but also had to keep the yacht ready to go at a moments notice in case the owners wanted to take a trip. Lots of hard work but I said its worth it an enjoyed it.

im not sure what constitutes a mega yacht. i saw on a TV show about million $ yachts they mentioned about the cost of staff on such a yacht. The captains salary was something like 70k/year. I would have to say it depends on the yacht and also who the owner is, qualifications of the Captain....... lots of variables to affect the wage/salary. try asking at a high end boat show or maybe even contact a yacht club.

The rule of thumb is 10,000 a year for every foot

100ft boat = 100k a year
