500 m in 4 hrs.. speed = 500/4 m/hr. speed is 3 times faster ie 1500/4 m/hr. So in 4 hrs they travelled 1500/4 * 4 = 1500 ms.. so total 2000 m. next one i did not understand...

Then three times faster for the next four hours.

Three times AS fast would be 1500 meters more, but three times FASTER should be 1500 plus the 500, then also add in the 500 for the first four hours, to make 2500 meters total.


Second question:

If your question is one-third over two and a half TIMES one-half over X and you are looking for X, then it's like this:

Multiply the first fraction by three over three. That will give you one over seven. Then you can see that one over seven is the same as one-half over three and a half.

The next one is confusing, are you multiplying fractions? Is x a variable or a sign?
