I've earned a B.A. in Anthropology (graduated May 2005). Cultural anthro is really my passion. I recently began attending graduate school for childhood education, and am doing well. I am not feeling challenged right now, and I would really like to get my Master's in antrho.... I never asked any profs for letters of reccomendation bc I didn't need them for the program I am currently in. Is it too late to ask my old profs for letters? Am I out of luck?? I need 3 letters to apply for the anthro program, what should I do??

Of course it is not too late!

Just contact your former professors by email, and let them know where you will be applying. (You should apply to several programs, with faculty who specialize in your SPECIFIC areas of interest -- geographical, methodological, etc.)

In these first emails, you should ask your former professors for advice about which programs to consider. You should also ask if they would be able to write you a strong recommendation, and if they'd like to receive (via email or post) any papers or exams you wrote for them while in their classes. Include in your initial email a reminder of which classes you took with them, and in which years you took these classes.

Here's a sample initial email inquiry:

"Dear Professor M,

I had the pleasure of taking many classes with you while I was at BBB University. I am now considering applying to Masters and Ph.D. programs in cultural anthropology, and I would like to know if you are able to write a strong letter of recommendation for me. (I had Anthro 101 with you in 2002, Anthro 233 with you in 2003, and Anthro 344 with you in 2005).

My interests are in the area of cultural anthropology, specifically, childrearing and marriage practices among the Uto-Aztecan speaking cultures of the American southwest, and therefore I am looking at the University of MMMMM, the University of FFFFFF, and the University of GGGGGG. If you can recommend other specific graduate programs or faculty to me, I would be most grateful.

I have attached a current resume to this email. Thank you very much for your assistance in this matter.

Most sincerely,"

When you hear from them, then make arrangements to send them any application forms or URL addresses for their recommendations (today, sometimes these are done online rather than in hard copy).

Rest assured, we write letters for former students all the time. And we usually remember you well, too!

Best wishes to you.
