You can also use a breast pump, although it might make your nipples sorer than just using your fingers.
Nipple stimulation can be done successfully and uterine hyper stimulation may be avoided by following this protocol from Maternity Nursing: Family, Newborn, and Women's Health Care by Reeder, Martin and Koniak-Griffin:
*roll nipples between thumb and forefingers for 2 minutes
*rest for 3 minutes
*repeat rolling/resting for 20 minutes*
*increase rolling to 3 minutes and decrease resting to 2 minutes for 20 minutes if inadequate contractions occur after initial 20 mins.
OR FROM ANOTHER SITE:
Nipple Stimulation
This is a well-known method of making the uterus contract. Used by
midwives for centuries, it not only stimulates the uterus during labor,
it is beneficial after the birth to aid in expelling the placenta and avoiding hemorrhage. Since this method uses her Natural oxytocin, it is the safest form of induction.
To Induce: Start by applying warm compresses to both breasts, uncover one breast and begin use of pump. Using an electric breast pump, start by pumping on uncovered side for 15 min then switch sides and place warm compress on pumped side and begin pumping on other side, continue this alternation technique until regular strong and rhythmic contractions begin (usually 20-30 minutes) then stop...if contractions should begin to decline in strength or regularity, resume breast stimulation with breast pump for 5 min/side until the strength and regularity resumes. Contractions should be a minimum of (5) minutes apart lasting 60-90 seconds.
An Alternative Method - Get into a tub of warm water, not too hot, but comfortably warm. Soak a towel in the water, about the size of a dishtowel, or a washcloth would work as well. Drape it over the breasts. Roll one nipple, through the towel, for up to 15 minutes, or as long as it takes to make a contraction happen. When the contraction begins, stop the stimulation. After it ends, wait about 5 minutes before stimulating the other nipple, and repeat the process for an hour. Then, take a break for 3 or 4 hours, and begin again. This is much less traumatizing on the nipples than using a breast pump, and may work as well or better.

I was ready to give birth after carrying my children all that time.. and I tried everything, from nipple stimulation, to having lots of sex... NOTHING WORKED. Now I do have to say that the nipple stimulation would give me contractions for a while afterwards, but nothing hard, and not constant, nothing that would be considered labor.. more like brackston Hicks contractions.. (sp) I would say that it probably doesn't work, unless I wasn't doing something right.. why don't you do a google of some sort on it and see what sites say?

I know, I'm a bloke, but don't worry I am not gonna offer to come over there an do it for you! I've heard mixed reports from previous questions on here and also on the net (I'm not a sicko going round the sites - was when ex was pregnant by the way) In the search for questions box at top of page type something like nipple stimulation to find the other answers. Good luck, and congratulations on the baby.

RE:
Nipple stimulation to induce labor?
How many of you have had success with this? How long did it take? What exactly did you do and for how long? Will using a breast pump work for this? Thanks in advance..serious answers only please.

I tried it and ended up having an emergency c-section after they lost the baby's heart beat. The contractions are unusually strong when you use nipple stimulation.

I did this when I was pregnant and I had some strong Braxton Hicks but they eventually went away. I learned that it's not healthy to try to enduce labor yourself. Your baby will come when it's ready. I was hoping that mine would come early, but she was born on her due date. I know it can be frustrating, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Well, I suppose if you want to spend HOURS a day playing w/ your nipples, give it a shot. It doesn't usually work though.
