This is a tough question to answer because you don't give us any finacial guidelines to go by (other than not being able to afford a car) a car is a huge expense, but it would be helpful if we knew how much you could afford or more to the point how much you are prepared to spend. If you are half way there to having enough money to buy him a car and that is what he truly wants more than anything I would suggest that you take the amount of money you are prepared to spend and invest it in a shorterm ( 1 year perhaps) investment, put it in his name, tell him that this is what you have to offer towards a car. Tell him that he if is truly interested in working with you towards the purchase of a car that you are willing to contribute more in a year (or whatever term of time the two of agree upon) Assuming that his grades are good enough and would not be jeopordized by a part time job, have him get a part time job & hopefully a full time job duirng holidays & Summer vacation) ask him to contribute 75% of what he earns towards the investment by savings & promise to match (again whatever percentage you are comfortable and able to match) at the expiration of the term , 1 year for example. So assuming the car he wants is 20,000, start by having a real , honest, mature discussion with him. Does he have to have a flashy sports car or doe he just want a decent, reliable car that will get him from point A to point B (keeping in mind that while every teenager would love a brand new corvette, BMW, etc) rememebr that every youths first car is usually the one he rags, takes the least amount of care of & while he may not be as happy with a different car, this just might be a good test of his maturity and his real desire for an automobile. try to agree on a car that will be reliable & safe, one that he can drive without being embarrassed etc. try to agree on a car that will cost (second hand**relaible and in good shape, roughly 12,500 to 15,000). You then take $5000 now put in to a safe yielding investment, where it will earn interest without too much jeopordy of losing any of the initial investment), THEN explain that however much he earns over the next year, lets say he earns $5,000 (this can be done) & Another $2,500 during the school year, after school, weekends, holiday etc. So now in one year he has earned 7,500, allow him to spend a certain amount, to round it off he gets to keep 2,000 while earning it to live off & to spend on necessities, so now in one year he has 5,000 to add, you match half of it by adding another 2,500. you have 17,500 + your earnigns on oyur investment. Then you pick a car together, and now agree on who is responsible for tax, title , license & don't forget gas, insurance and car upkeep. good luck, this is wonderful opportunity to teach you son about money, responsibility & the real world.

If you don't like that idea, pay for him to take a trip of his choice, always a good gift.

I'm a 16 year old girl, who has TONS of guy friends. I'm not sure what he is into, but if he's into sports, tickets to a game would be good, or if he plays them, new equipment would be cool too. Or you could take him and 3 or 4 good friends somewhere the weekend of his birthday- his choice. Also, An i pod or laptop would be cool if he doesn't already have one.
Pretty much, get him anything he can show off to his freinds and he'll love it.
