It is a spelling rule dealing with the order of ie in a word. Take the word belief - i comes before e. In the word receive...the e comes first because if follows c.

The rule is i before e except after c. It is the exception to the spelling rule that the letter i comes before the letter in a word. Example: believe.

However in such words as "receive", "conceive" and "deceive" ei follows the c and not ie..

This is words dealing with the letters i and e together or side by side. The letter i usually always comes before the letter e in words. The exception is when the i and e come after the letter c, when you put the letter e first or the e before the letter i. For example the word receive.

It's for when you're having trouble remembering how to spell a word.

When it's a word like "receive", the "i" does not come before the "e" because of the "c". If it's a word like "retrieve", then the "i" comes before the "e" because there is no "c" before them.

I hope that made sense. lol

The version I've heard is "i before e except after c or in words like weigh or heigh".

:)

It is a "rule" for spelling certain words.
Examples:
Believe (I before E)
Conceive (Except after C)
If you have a word that makes the "ee" sound it is usually spelled "ei" when preceeded by a "C".
I repeat this "rule" to myself to this day when spelling such words.
Good luck

please correct your spelling/grammar when asking a question about spelling...

"I" before "E" except after "C" is an old spelling rule--that doesn't always apply--when "I" and "E" are next to each other in a word:

For example:

belief (see that the "I" comes before the "E" in this word)
receipt (the "E" comes before the "I" in this word because it falls after "C")

it means that 'i' is always before 'e' (ie) like in pie and tie etc...it is never 'ei' unless it is after 'c' like receive or receipt etc...do you get it?
