Yes it will. However, to access your own desktop from the internet you need to forward port 3389 on your router to the internal IP address of your machine. If you do that, make SURE that all accounts with RDP access have strong passwords as your machine will be wide open to hackers on the internet and your only security will be the quality of your passwords.

Yes it can work through the internet, however, you have to make sure the destination firewall allows port 3389 to flow through.

For example the flow
Source Computer --> Firewall A --> Internet --> Firewall B --> Destination Computer:3389

You have to configure Firewall B and allow port 3389 to Destination Computer.

If you are actually trying to get remote access the best tool for the job is something called Logmein which can be reached by the following link:

This is perhaps the most simplest way to setup remote access

There's also special software out there - like PC anywhere that makes it easier than messing around with I your router - I believe. It's confusing once you start messing with router ports. Be careful. If you use the software like the one above, I believe it's a lot more secure than leaving your port open as the software has to be on both computers.
