I have a cheap Vicks Steam Vaporizer/humidifier that produces this weird black floaty gunk in the water basin. Anybody know what it is?

possibly mildew or mold. a light solution of bleach and water should clean and sanitize that quite easily. I recommend 1 fluid ounce of bleach diluted in 1 half gallon (64oz) of water, preferably cool as hot water renders chlorine inert and useless. use caution to not over bleach the humidifier as it can cause you to become ill should you vaporize the bleach. hope this helps

mold....seriously. The water should be changed between every use. Its a pain. Thats why everyone is switching to the coolmist vaporizers. They dont produce mold.

Most likely mold. You need to clean it with bleach or even dish soap will work. Take it apart and let it dry thoroughly (including the filter if there is one.) Mold can make you quite ill and will aggravate any allergies you have.
