New York City is great - if you are new, you can easily find jobs at day spas, and when you develop a loyal clientele you can start your own business.

A former co-worker of mine has a daughter in law that is a Massage therapist. She says the best money is in Florida. There are a lot of older retired couples there who think nothing of spending 200-300 for an in-home massage. Right out of school she was making from 50-60K a year. On the other hand, the cost of living in Florida is higher than some other states. Hope this helps.

Massage is a skill that will always be needed in every state. The question you should be asking is...whom do you want to work with? If you goto Florida then you will be doing geriatric massage, is that what you want? If you work in a place with tourists (destination spas) you will meet lots of people but never establish relationships.

First determine who your ideal client is, and then move to an area where you wil find them. Also, consider cost of living. It is cheaper to live in North Carolina than New York city so you wont be pressured to work all the time. Massage is a tough, physically demanding field and having financial pressure really makes it not fun.

I don't know if you've already been massage school yet, but I have a friend who is a massage therapist and she tells me that it is a tuff industry to make a living in. She wishes she had become a physical therapist instead...because insurance is more willing to pay for the cost and therefore it is easier to get clients.

Any place with a lot of spas, I would think California. Florida has lots of seniors but you would need to go to the Gold Coast (West Palm beach area) or the Naples area. These are big dollar areas. Although we do have spas all around now.

Good Luck.
