Reader's Digest had a great explanation. When you were born, there was a life expentancy for males and a separate one for females. With modern medical advances, each year that expentancy is changed and the life expectancy increases. The difference between someone born in 2004 and a 50 year old in 2004 is different because of technology.

No it's not for people born in the year stated , it's people dying in that year basically. So someone birn in 2004 can expect a life expectancy of quite a few years more than teh one stated for the year they were born.

The life expectancy is different to the average life span though, don't get the two mixed up!
