If you're talking a tank about 55 gallons or more, I'd recommend about six of these sharks. In nature, they do shoal (school) together. Though sexing these fish are rather easy, I would never recommend two of those in a tank alone, be it m/f or not.
I have some of these lovely fish myself, and have viewed their habitual territory claims. They can and most likely will kill each other, if there is only two. Why? Because these fish are either travelling in schools, or LIVING in their own, individual territories for periods of time. Without other sharks habitating your tank, the two will square off, assuming they'd have to make a claim of the territory. Even in a 55 with adequate caves and hiding places, it would still be risky with only two due to their nature. Any smaller than a 55 and you may find yourself having a problem, if you choose to get a group of these lovelies. They all grow roughly 4-5 inches, some can even stretch to 6-7, like their relatives the rainbow sharks! (That is not their average size- however, having a couple 7-inch sharks myself seems proof enough that they are capable of reaching this length ;)!
I would strongly suggest keeping it by itself in a smaller tank- maybe add some other species for it to interact with?
I know they're irresistablely charming fish to keep, but they can cause some serious damage to each other- even death!
I hope things work out well for you, and you and your shark(s) have a nice outcome. ^_^
Hope this helps!

Redtails are not true sharks. They actually like to school so you should have several in a tank. Gender is irrelevant in terms of compatibility.

you're on the splendid music. i could truly go as much as 4 Otos, you have the area, and that they choose to stay in a team like the corys. No woman betta, tank isn't sufficiently huge to start up mixing male betta with the two intercourse. you're able to desire to probably advance the variety of fish, yet carry on with the comparable species, 6 cories or 10 Neons for example, yet i does no longer as you likely could desire to save the clear out present day all the way down to maintain the betta happy. skill the clear out wont artwork end as properly, yet betta dont like solid currents. you're nonetheless terrific to get a great clear out and turn down the circulate however, as that could have greater media then a small clear out. 50gph however a larger 100gph clear out is greater powerful than 50gph however a small clear out. additionally otos and neons desire an regular and good tank, so i could start up off with merely the betta. as quickly as the tank is working easily (a pair of weeks?), slip interior the cories and depart it yet another couple of weeks. Then neons, then Otos final as there could desire to be some algae for them to graze on by skill of then. it extremely is advantageous to assist out some man or woman who has clever suggestions approximately tank stocking. sturdy luck.
