I know that if we miss out on REM dreaming we build up something called sleep debt and this must be recovered at some stage. People who have hypersomnia have decreased or absent REM and therefore sleep excessively but still feel tired. WHy exactly is REM important?

REM is also important in brain function. During REM you brain processes information you have learned through out the day, and puts important information into lond term memory . There have been studies done that show learning and retention improves with proper amounts of REM. If you don't get enough REM scores on your tests (in school for example) can decrease.

REM sleep, as it was explained to me at my sleep study, is important because it allows your body to completely shut down without dying. You won't stop breathing or anything like that. It just allows you to shut down, and your body to "feel" rested. When you don't have REM sleep you can feel drowsy, or overtired. You may also develop things such as depression from the lack of sleep.
