I think that the thing you should be looking for is: what components are in the laptop. It's too hard to say - "which brand" is best because all brands have their junk and their good stuff.

It's really hard to buy a bad laptop today unless you buy it with a lower chip and not enough memory. Most popular computer manufacturers have decent support and warranties. Just remember, if it's made with cheap components - it's cheap - you get what you pay for - especially with laptops.

Another thing people don't think about is the screen. Make sure you get the best screen available. It's what you'll be looking at all day - makes a huge difference as adds a pretty buck to the price. Again - the same rule applies - if it's cheap - it is.

I'm a fan of Toshiba- their laptops usually offer excellent performance, are priced well, and they have solid support. I think things went downhill after IBM sold off its laptop division to Lenovo, but they're still ok. Avoid HP/Compaq, way too many problems...

I can't speak for Apples, I'm a PC guy - although every Mac owner I know of, swears by 'em.

I would go with the apple titanium powerbook. They are one of the most expensive ones out there, but they also outperform everything else on the market.
