My son's bday is in Oct. also. We do a theme party every year, but keep it inexpensive.

Here are some of his favorites so far:

POLICEMAN PARTY: I called my local police and set up a time for a tour of the station. They were AWESOME! They took the kids mug shots, finger printed them, let them sit in the police car, ran the siren and introduced the dogs. They even had a bag of police goodies for each of the kids - awesome and FREE!! They had a little talk on safety too. Afterward, we went back to our house for gifts, cake and ice cream. Very cheap, very fun and informative too. The parents that wanted to were able to put their kids' mug shots and fingerprints on file as well for safety reasons.

We sent the trooper that gave us a tour a thank you note, and he actually wrote us back and thanked us! It is a great memory.

PIRATE PARTY:

We gave a prize for the child that came dressed as the best pirate. They were so cute! We had a treasure hunt that started inside, went outside and ended up at a plastic treasure chest filled with the take home goodie bags and my son's gifts. They had to follow the clues on a treasure map to find it. Each location on the map had another piece of map. I made a 9x13 cake and put plastic rocks, trees and pirates on it. I made some blue icing for the water and sprinkled brown sugar on yellow icing for sand. I surrounded the whole cake with broken pretzel sticks around the edges. Soooo easy but really cute.

We hid gold coins around the house and then they could use their "bounty" to "buy" little trinkety toys and candy which they added to their bags. I decorated the table with black cups and plates and scattered more "gold" coins and my old costume jewelry about it.

Very fun party

I have lots more ideas ( he just turned 13!!) so add more details above if you want any more.

Have fun!

Let him pick a theme, buy a nice cake, and get some prices at the dollar store, you can be the host and make the kids play, there is no need to hire a clown, 5 or 6 games will do, go to www.partygamecentral.com they have hundred of games classifieds by age, if you pick a Western Party, be dressed with a cowboy outfit, if you are planning a pirate party, be a pirate that day, be involved, make the kids play, get them organize for the games, contact me for free ideas, let the store managers or store employees in your area know that you are looking for great offers, so if they have a toy clearence to give you a call, I have just bought all the goody bags filllers from a General Dollar store who was closing, most of the stores like walgreens, cvs, publix, toys r us etc have great items and toys that need to discontinue and are sold for pennies, If you plan ahead you can get great deals, I will be more than happy to help you, contact me at katialpz@yahoo.com or kidsmemoriespartyrental@yahoo.com

I can't think of any good party ideas but I done a balloon drop for my children's coming home party a few years ago and is still talked about to this day.
You can get all the supplies you need from party city including the tearaway balloon bag for the drop. Fill it with different sized confetti, some various sized balloons (Many water balloons work great), some candy, money, and party toys.
Hang it from your ceiling, stand him underneath it and pull the string. I guarantee he will never forget it.

The idea of taking the children to a police station is a good idea for a small town . Where I live, they wouldn't have the time. Some other ideas can be found on these site. They have parties for all ages. http://www.party411.com/index.html or http://www.evite.com/app/party/ideas.do

I've had parties for my kids at the roller rink, movies, & hired a pony & cowboy to come. You can always play games & do a pizza party at home.
