also what is the difference between a flexor and an extensor?

Couple of reasons, deep arteries protects them and is a means of conserving heat energy. A flexor is a muscle that pulls something towards the body, extensor is a muscle that pulls something away from the body.... but better check your book, they may have changed biology since I took it 30+ years ago!

ummm, to protect them from injury.... just like the heart and lungs are protected by your rib cage, brain is housed inside a skull.

without going to great detail flexors pull and extensors push. an example would be your elbow or fingers, flexors cause them to close and extensors extend or open them again.
