Power Mad? No, it is not true. The United States had a window of oppurtunity to conquer the world while it had a monopoly on nuclear weapons. It did not take the oppurtunity.
Politically Stupid? I think it is partly true. Many Americans base their views on some form of bias rather than working to confirm their beliefs. They don't really care about their country, but being right or just having power

the US is so big & so much is going on in the country that not a lot of news from foreign countries reaches american media... so a lot of politically "foolish" decisions are just a result of lack of information about foreign countries. americans arent politically stupid and power mad, but sometimes overconfident & misinformed.
p.s. to Common Sense: wealth and power have nothing to do with intelligence. you can be a powerful idiot and a powerless genius ;)
