Why do referees in all sports wear stripes?

I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. I figured someone who's into sports may know. Maybe the history of referees ??

Referee wear stripes because.... they were stripes. In the NBA they wear grey shirts. I guess the stripes started with the team colors and the referee uniforms being distinctly different from everyone else.

baseball umpires don't wear stripes, neither do soccer refs or NBA basketball refs. refs wear them to stand out on the playing field
