I remember phones with cranks on the side that were used to get the operator, and also party lines where two or more families shared the same phone line but only one could make a call at any one time and the others had to wait.

Yup.
Get this -- I was in a little tiff with my 14 year old daughter the other day. She hadn't called me to tell me something (I forget what it was now) and she didn't have her cell phone with her. Anyway, I actually said to her "You could have called. There's a pay phone on every corner". She said "mom, I've never seen a pay phone in my whole life". Whoa -- I'm old.
