The EASIEST way to eliminate the belt, or ANYTHING the belt drives is to remove the belt, and run the engine WITHOUT the belt for a couple of seconds. If you still hear the squeaking sound, obviously IT'S NOT THE BELT OR TENSIONER. If it is equipped with the 3.0L OHV V6, listen for the noise near the transmission. If you hear the noise there, it's your cam sensor and synchronizer that needs to be replaced. The synchronizer is driven by the camshaft. On the other end of the synchronizer, is the engine's oil pump. The reason they fail is due to sludge build-up inside the body of the synchronizer. The sludge build-up is usually caused by lack of regular oil changes. If the synchronizer seizes up, you will also lose oil pressure to the engine, due to the pump not being driven. If this happens, it's bye bye engine!!! The usual symptoms for the synchronizer failure are, a CHIRPING, or SQUEAKING sound extremely similar to, and almost always misdiagnosed as a belt and/or tensioner failure to those unfamiliar with these Tauruses. Installation requires timing the the part in the EXACT same location orientation as the original part failing which will result in driveability issues.

The Idler Pulley is a frequent source of squeaks and is very cheap and easy to replace. Litterally, once you have put some slack on the tensioner to loosen the belt you only need one socket to remove and replace the idler pulley.

The tensioner and/or tensioner pulley is another frequent cause of these noises and like the Idler Pulley is a frequent point of failure. Since the car is a 99' I'd be tempted to just go ahead and replace both as preventive maintenance. They are going to fail eventually anyway. They always do on a Taurus.

The loafer Pulley is a typical source of squeaks and is amazingly low-priced and hassle-free to interchange. Litterally, as quickly as you have positioned some slack on the tensioner to loosen the belt you purely desire one socket to get rid of and replace the loafer pulley. The tensioner and/or tensioner pulley is yet another standard reason for those noises and prefer the loafer Pulley is a typical component of failure. because of the fact the motor vehicle is a ninety 9' i may be tempted to purely pass forward and replace the two as preventive upkeep. they're going to fail ultimately besides. They constantly do on a Taurus.
