Each of those cities should have a Dept of Transportation. For train information, you should contact Amtrak, which handles most of the trains in those cities. Taxis are fairly straightforward, charging flat rates to the airport (generally around 40 dollars) and their rates should be apparent in every taxi. They are the most expensive option.
Subways have very clearly marked stops, at least in New York, and run frequently during the peak hours, weekday mornings and evenings. They cost about 2 dollars a ride, but special prices can be obtained by buying a multi-ride ticket, which often gives you six rides for the price of five. If you're travelling very far, they are the least expensive option. Maps of the stops and lines can be obtained at the stations, and should also be obtainable through the Dept of Transportation in each city.

When I attended a conference in Charlotte, NC in November, I wanted to know how to get around on public transit, too. I also needed to know about accessibility; I use a wheelchair to get around. Your best bet is to first find out what the transit system is called (Here in the Boston area, it's the MBTA). You can then access the database to get schedules and information. Go to a search engine and type in: "(city name), public transportation". It helps to have an idea of what sights you'd like to see. I make jewelry, so I found some bead shops in the Charlotte area and found a bus that could get me there from my hotel. Good luck and enjoy yourself! By the way, Philadelphia is SEPTA and NYC is MTA.

then you're not looking very hard.
All of these cities have great public transportation.
Try going to Google and typing "public transportation Philadelphia" and see what you get.
