Lamar Hunt...owner of the Kansas City Chiefs and one of the executives involved in the merging of the AFL and NFL...came up with the name after seeing his daughter playing with a super ball. (I understand that his daughter's super ball is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.) Since the first Super Bowl was played in 1966, I presume that's when it happened.

The first 2 games were called the NFL-AFL World Championship signifying the rivalry between the 2 leagues.

Before the 3rd game, Kansas City Chiefs owner LaMar Hunt (who died only 3 weeks ago) came up with the name Super Bowl.

He saw his daughter playing with a bouncing super ball and thought of the great college games like the Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl and VOILA, the name was born.

The tickets printed for the Jets-Colts game had "Super Bowl III" printed on them and Super Bowls have been connotated with Roman Numerals ever since.

Super Bowl III was played in January, 1969 so Mr. Hunt came up with the name sometime in 1968. The first Super Bowl was playing in January, 1967
