The purpose of a semi-colon, is to join two or more very closely related sentences so that a remark can flow on without being a "run-on" sentence.
Example:
Following a semi-colon the next word must join the sentences followed by a comma; and, the rest of the sentence must be able to stand alone.
Notice the two sentences in the Example can each stand alone, but work better together.
See how the 2 sentences can each stand alone:
Following a semi-colon the next word must joing the sentences followed by a comma.
The rest of the sentence must be able to stand alone.
Semi-colons are great in writing a theme sentence for a report. In the theme sentence, each
; and,
can represent a paragraph that will follow in the body of the report.
The writer may use other words that join related sentences such as
also,
in addition,
therefore,
plus,
therefore it follows,
any many more.

A semicolon is used where a comma should be used, but you skip the conjuction when you use a semicolon.
You can use this: I like to camp; I also like to dine out.
Instead of this: I like to camp, and I also like to dine out.
