Your resume should be no more than one page unless you're a brain surgeon. Your cover letter needs to announce your resume and cover points very concisely on how you fit THAT job.

Dear (employer):

It is with pride that I present my resume for the available position of (title) that was advertised in the (source of ad).

With 4+ years experience in (industry or occupation) I feel that a personal interview would allow us the chance to get to know each other better. My highlights include:

* Point A
* Point B
* Point C

(tailor those points to what's in the job requirements in the ad)

My phone number is (xxx) xxx-xxxx and I am available to interview with only a 24 hour notice.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely,
NAME

DO: watch your typing and spelling
DO: be polite and upbeat. You ARE the right person
DO: match your cover letter to the ad

DONT: mention salary unless specified it's a must
DONT: ramble on and on with text - keep it simple
DONT: use a form letter style cover letter - tailor to the job

A cover letter should be some ways "personalized". Express an interest, even passion, for the work that you are applying to get. Do some research about the company and position your are interested in. You should highlight aspects of your personal and work experience that would be relevant in the job.

The same goes for your resume. Be sure that it is targeted in its focus.
