If it's a perspiration smell, soak the tops in a saltwater solution (about 4 tb to a sink full of water) overnight. The saltwater acts as an enzyme to break down the odor. Then pour a cup of white vinegar into your normal wash cycle. I like putting the vinegar in during the wash cause then it doesn't interfere with the fabric softener or leave a vinegary smell on clothes like when you add during the rinse cycle. White vinegar is also great cause it brightens whites and deodorizes without causing any damage to colored clothes like bleach does.
I also like changing up my brand of detergent and dryer sheets every now and then, sometimes that's enough of a pick me up odor wise.

A cup of vinegar may work but a bit of Hydrogen Peroxide will do wonders to, just go easy with it. Both Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide are excellent cleaning agents, if you boil either of them down you can have a powerful bleaching agent too.
I understand, my husbands shirts get this odor after a few months of normal wear and normal washing, it is similar to "ring around the collar" in that it appears at around the same time and can be difficult to clear. The odor is sweat and other body soil left even after washing in a washing machine. If a shirt is particularly bad, get a basin of warm soapy water and roll up two or three clean (and odor free) socks and put them in the toe of a third/fourth. Scrub each and every inch of the shirt thoroughly from both sides paying special attention to the collars, cuffs and seams.

I would suggest putting a cup of vinegar in the wash machine along with your detergent and a load of shirts, use cold water, if the shirts are not fade Resistance.
A cup of Vinegar will also make your towels soft too

Take a bath and use deodorant! Seriously, commercial grease remover found in the automotive section at Wally World (the purple stuff) will remove any residue in the clothing with one washing. Use only the grease remover when washing the offending load. Then rewash with your normal detergent. Voila!

Add baking soda to the wash in the wash cycle. Then add 1 cup of vinegar to the rinse water (no fabric softener). Then remove from washer as soon as cycle is done and dry.
