loads of differences. an extreme example would be female circumcision. highly abusive in western culture but normal in others. other examples can be that women have a right to vote, work, divorce etc in western cultures but other cultures see nothing wrong with subjugating these rights.

in some african cultures mental illness is viewed as inhabitation by an evil spirit. the person is then subjected to an exorcism where they are spat on, shouted at or even beaten to rid them of the evil spirit. clearly this is abusive in western ideology.

i am sure if you consider it you could also identify how other cultures treat children and older people differently in terms of rights or liberties.

Hell yeah, in many parts of Africa 11 year old years are married off to 40 year old men, In that culture this is considered normal but here in North America that's called being a sick pedophile.

There just some cultures out there who don't deserve respect.

Another example, in Chinese culture it is considered normal for a Husband to kick, punch and slap his wife. Uh huh, try doing that in front of an American police officer here in the states and see what happens.

on Channel 4 last night was a documentary about female lawyers in the Cameroons, called 'Sisters in Law'. With a predominantly Muslim culture, the female judge had to adjudicate over several cases of wife-beating which the men declared was their 'right'. Also, the wife could not divorce her husband and it was acceptable that beating could be used to bring the wife into submission. 14 year old girls were regularly sold by their fathers into marriage. A 6 year old girl was beaten with a wire coat hanger and left with scars all over her body. the female judge found the perpetrators guilty, and sentenced them all to varying lengths of prison term including hard labour.
But my point is, in the Cameroons' Muslim culture, all this behaviour is considered acceptable. Many of the men brought before the court were bewildered as to why an (inferior, they thought) female judge was applying justice to what they considered their rightful behaviour!

In many cultures it is acceptable for a man to beat his wife and or children.

In many cultures mothers and teachers can beat children.

Rape within marriage was only outlawed in the UK in the last 20 years - until then it was a man's right to have sex with his wife.

In Thailand girls are 'sold' to brothels - many parents see it as being the same as working in a factory.

How do you define 'abuse' - in Saudi Arabia a woman must have her husband's permission to travel and are not allowed to drive.

Some cultures can have old men marrying like twelve year old girls? There was a case of that where I live, a taxi driver my friends were talking to was about 45 and married to a thirteen year old. He was from the middle east somewhere.

1. Wife-beating is toleated in many Muslim countries because the Law (Sharia) is in favor of men retaining their hold over their women, but obviously it's not tolerated anywhere else.

2. Child labor is accepted in developing countries like Brazil, China and India but not in the West.

3. Slavery is still prevalent in countries like Sudan and Mauritania in the form we read in history books.

Beating your wife is acceptable in Islam. In Canada, the abuser is charged with assault ... and the victim has no say in the matter. If the victim doesn't press charges, the police do.

I believe in some religions and in some countries if a wife doesnt do what her husband says she can be beaten.
