Plato was first a wrestler--no kidding. He won prizes. The name "Plato" was actually his nickname, and it means "Broad-shouldered" in Greek. While he was a young wrestler, he was also a student of philosophy, and eventually became one of the greatest teachers/philosophers in all of history. He was also a writer of very great fame.

He was not a sculptor, however, as someone mentions. That was Socrates' profession.

First off, be assured that Plato does not belong in this category. He existed. He was one of the most important philosophers whose writings are the backbone of much of the the modern-day. A large body of his work was saved by the Muslims in Andalucia and rediscovered by Latin Europe at the beginning of the Renaissance. His philosophy is still the basis of the Catholic church.
