I'm black, and I found that funny. My parents are from Africa, by the way, so my name is real.

Oh why don't you stop it. There are just as many white americans with jacked up names as there are blacks. And for you to say, "Black British women don't choose these sorts of names so why do African American women......" That's the problem right there...you need to be concerned about Britain and not worry about what AA women do and not try to come off as if you're superior. At the end of the day, you're still BLACK and all other races see you as that even if your name is Jane or Sue.

My son has a traditional name. But I want to say this. People have the choice of naming someone what they want. After a woman has gone through hours of contractions, stitches, and months getting her figure back then to care for that child for twenty years, they can name them what they want and it is nobodys business. They have to deal with it.

Still better than biblical names, which are over-used and out of date. Native Americans had the coolest names.

I was thinking the names sound more like the sound of an animal evacuating their bowels what ever sound the plop makes that be the name of the child.

Wow, that's very rude. What's next? Making fun of people from China's names? I'm black and I find that very rude. Whether you meant it to be rude or not, it is. You could have worded this in a more polite manner.

I am white, married to a lovely, hardworking black man, and we have a beautiful 15 year old biracial daughter. Her name is Zuri, and it means beauty or beautiful in the Swahili language. I, too, have noticed the uniqueness of names in the African American culture, and asked about it once. The answer I got, and you can take it for what it's worth, is that for so long, blacks as slaves were not allowed to name their own children. When they were freed, the majority of them could not read, and they named their children phonetically. It's how a name SOUNDS, not necessarily how it is spelled, or any meaning it may have. It's not weird or bad or anything other than DIFFERENT than the Caucasian culture.
