A goldfish would work or a small catfish. Nothing that moves too fast like tiger barbs, they will nip betta fins. A small corydoras catfish would be my recommendation.
sealguy77 is wrong, bettas are only territorial with other bettas and a crab would tear up the bettas fins.

I'm sorry, but unfortunatly, no. A goldfish is a coldwater fish and will quickly dirty your tank if your tank not big enough and could kill your betta. The minimum tank size for a goldfish is 50 gallons. A betta is a tropical fish and it's water should be kept at 76-80 degrees F with a heater and a filter. I would say the minimum tank size for a betta would be at least 2 gallons (3+ gallons is more preferable). A coldwater fish and a tropical fish could not live together without one of them dying. You would be better off buying a seperate tank for one of them and suplying your betta with a filter and a heater and your goldfish with at least a filter. Sorry to tell you this, but at least now you know and you wont wake up one morning with a dead fish. Goodluck! :D

NO GOLDFISH! geez... what is wrong with these people? goldfish are COLD WATER fish, bettas are TROPICAL fish. you need a heater for a betta. also NOT OTHER BETTAS, not even female bettas, males can't be with other bettas. females can be kept together.
if you have your betta in 2-5 gallons with a filter and heater try getting a mystery snail, my females love to follow the mystery snail I have in with them around the tank. you need a filter thought because they are messy. a two gallon bowl won't work. you'll also most likely have to separate the snail one day a week to make sure he gets enough calcium. put him in his own little cup of water and add crushed (to fine powder) seashell.
if you have 10 gallons with a filter and heater try a few schooling fish, about 4 or 5. tetras are a hit and miss, they work, but sometimes can get agressive and eat your bettas pretty fins, so I wouldn't suggest them. mollies and platies would work. but I'd personally go with a few corydoras, I think they're very cute and they eat extra food on the ground so you don't get fungus growth. you will have to feed them their own food too though, because there won't always be a steady amount of extra food.
if you'd like to go bigger feel free to email me (link is on my profile page) and I'd be happy to help, or if you have any other betta questions.

So you are a fish psychologist and know he is lonely? Male Bettas are highly territorial and loners unless they want to mate. They are highly intelligent fish that have their own personalities that you can interact with. Maybe you are neglecting him and that is why he seems depressed.
Otherwise, some goldfish seem to get along with Bettas when the tank is large enough. It all depends on the size of the tank, you need at least a 15 gallon to keep a Betta and another fish.

Betta fish are Territorial basically the only thing they can be matched with from my knowledge is a female Betta but there is a risk of them laying eggs one way to notice if they are going to is if the male blows bubbles on the top of the tank so the female can lay eggs

What size tank is he in? They do well with most community fish as long as they don't have long colorful fins like they do. You could even add come bottom feeders but only if your tank is big enough, nothing smaller then 5 gallons. It also needs a heater and filter.

goldfish are good friends for betas but im pretty sure that you can put any other non-agressive fish in there with it, just dont put another beta in there. You could also ask the people at the pet store, they should know.

Well, make sure you don't get another male beta!
I'll try to find you some links. I don't care about points, so if someone else finds links first, that's fine with me.
Hugs--
