I have some jpgs recovered from a formatted hard drive. They are corrupt and won't open in any photo viewing utility. However, the thumbnails for them seem to display just fine. How is this possible?

dont think that jpg files only have pixel data alone..
it contains many colour standards
headers , metadata , caption , encoded method and program
exposure , dpi , and so many embedded..

similarly thumbnail is a part of any such image..
remember original file is not a projection of that thumbnail..

Because the thumb nail is simply a shortcut to the file! As a matter of fact, did you copy the thumbnails? If so, you didnt copy the actual files in the first place.

may be you can resave the thumbnail under different name or file type like gif or something then open?
