sterotype: sf gay?

Question

i live in san francisco and whenever i go some place else, when people ask me where i am from the conversation always goes:
"i'm from san francisco"
"then are you gay?"
i AM gay, so this immediatly make me feel uncomfertable, i start to wonder if they will not be open minded to me. It seems as though they mean it as an insult, or a joke, as if they expect you not to be gay. it just makes me really angry. i what do you guys think?

Hey I live in San Francisco too!

I understand where your coming from! I lived in Wash DC and I moved to SF 4 years ago...and when I tell people where I'm living now...they ask that same question. People might joke around about SF being a gay mecca...but I think its a good thing that people know! There isnt' alot of places in the world where LGBTQ people can be themselves!

Try not to get angry or upset when someone is asking about your sexuality...maybe they might be gay too and just want your advice! ...u never know!

From my personal experience, some people might come off sounding like they're being condescending, but I tell them "yeah I'm gay" and most of the time, I'm suprised by the postive responses I get.

I figure if they ask if "I'm gay" they are already open minded to some extent! I give people alot of credit for just being brave enough to ask...because I rather them ask me about my sexuality than just make assumptions!

I am also from San Francisco and gay and yet I have never had that question posed to me. Maybe because I am tall and people may be too intimidated to ask...who knows. But I understand where you're coming from...it's an inane question to ask...but also keep in mind that the person may be asking out of sincere curiosity and not meaning to be offensive. Next time they ask, respond "Yes, and you?"

BTW: Ken S, San Francisco is not overpopulated with evil; get over yourself and quit being so judgemental.

While gay communities exist all over the planet SF is just a city known for Alcatraz, gays, and rice a roni..period. People are gonna think what they want to think and make assumptions with no facts but you can choose how you respond to it. Instead of feeling uncomfortable or pissed, SPEAK UP! Let them know there are gay communities in SF but not everybody in the entire city is homosexual. Better yet tell them you're gay and ask them how they feel about it. Put them on the spot ..or if worst came to worst think of the worst stereotype about them and tell then parallel.

You live in the Gay Mecca of the U.S. and you're angry when people figure out your sexuality from your place of residence? I think that would be kinda obvious that people are going to make that assumption...

People think of San Francisco of a city where everyone is gay. People can be ignorant, but you just need to ignore it. Last time I was at a Giants game, I don't remember seeing rainbow flags everywhere

all people who variations who they for sure are to stress themselves right into a stereotype are people who annoy me, out of ANY team, be it gay adult males, lesbians, emo young babies, goth young babies, scene young babies, any stereotype. human beings could desire to be who they actually should be and not exchange themselves. although, it would not subject me if human beings merely carry on with a stereotype if it extremely is who they are truthfully. i understand a lot of gay adult males who could be seen "stereotypical" gay adult males, yet it extremely is who they are truthfully, so who cares? they are able to precise themselves although they like. the only human beings I actually have a topic with, like I mentioned, are people who attempt to alter each and everything approximately themselves to in good shape right into a stereotype merely because of the fact they think of it will lead them to greater familiar or it extremely is what they "could desire to" be doing.

Why would that make you angry? Most of us are led to believe that a large population of homosexuals live in San Fransico. Is this wrong?

If you have a problem being gay or ashamed of it, that would be a reason to get offended...

Next time they ask, say "yes, wanna go out sometime?" That should shut them up! OR you might get a date out of it!
