I was a bit confused about the exact difference between bullying and being racist until a guy explained it on BBC one this morning (show where they read the newspapers).
He said being racist is where you stop talking about the person as an individual and start saying 'they'. For instance when Jade on Big Brother said 'they' all eat with their fingers don't they, its disgusting?'.
It got me thinking if Jade had said about Shipla - 'SHE eats with her fingers, its disguisting', that wouldn't be racist according to above definition as its referring to Shipla as an individual.
I can't see how the above 'they' versus 'individual' definition could fully work though because if somebody said 'SHE is black' then its still referring to the person as an individual but that would definitely be racist! Also 'they' comments are used all the time when skin colour is not an issue, for instance saying bad things about gypsys as a group.

The reason I ask this quesiton is all the news seems to have covered is the 'racist' aspect of Jade's behaviour. No-one seems to be acknowledging that her bullying behaviour is terrible too and what annoys me is if there had been no hint of racism (but just the bullying), the news probably wouldn't have covered it.

Racism has many different definitions. Historically, it has been defined as the belief that race is the primary determinant of human capacities, that a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation. Sometimes racism means beliefs, practices, and institutions that discriminate against people based on their perceived or ascribed race.

Racist normally means you fell one race is better than the other. Even the concept of Race it self is Racist and has been proven scientifically false. The concept of race had white people being the smartest, then the Mediterranean where not as smart, than Indians where savages, Asians where the second lowest normally buck tooth and stupid, then you had Africans that where though of as descendants of dogs or monkeys. I do not know either one of them personally so I do not know what they think. However Obama does speak like one when he refers to people. One he thinks that the only poor whites out there are appalachian or "Hillbilly". He also referred to small town people as clinging to religion and guns. Which is a stereotype. If McCain said something like the black family is in trouble today, they do not even have enough money for food like watermelon and fried chicken, then we would hear about it. But what both side do is just claim someone is racist.

I am not being racist in any way. But my advice to any Brit is so you cannot ever be accused of racism by any other Ethnic Minority, is go back to the olden days when everyone used to hang around with their own colour. That way no one can have any problems anymore. This is the Governments fault by letting racism get out of hands and allowing more and more immigrants into the UK. Tony Blair and his cronies are forcing the Brits out of their own country.

I don't think anyone knows anymore. Re. big brother - I don't consider calling anyone a dog racist. I don't consider referring to someone as the black man or indian woman racist - if I was in a house with all black people and someone was talking about me and said the white girl I would not consider it racist - it's a fact for god sake. Like Jade and Danielle, I would also not like someone putting their fingers in my food whether they are indian, black or any other race - it's simply not nice. If Jermaine can call Jade and her family white trash - presumabley, it is perfectly acceptable to call his mother black trash?

Being a racist means that you accept a minority's bad behavior JUST because they are a minority. For instance; a black drug addict is the victim of the system while a white drug addict is weak. This is so falliable that only a fool can believe it. What about non-drug addicted blacks? Did they ecsape our 'horrible nation'? And did whites become addicts because of affirmative actions? Giving blacks special rights IS racism as well as the never again blame game against whites. Liberals are the most racist people in the world.

Racism is a belief system or doctrine which states that inherent biological differences between human races determine cultural or individual achievement — with a corollary that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others

Whether you think it was racist or not I think we both agree that what Jade Goody said was rude and highly uncalled for.
