Shift is to select mutliple items in a list and CTRL is to select specific items.
For Shift, click on an item. Then, hold shift and click on another item. All items between the two that you selected will be highlighted.
For CTRL, click on an item. Then, hold CTRL and click on another item. Only the two (or more) items that you selected will be highlighted.
You can use Shift and CTRL to un-highlight things too.

Hi Julia, you have different options when comes the time to select stuff.
CTRL + A : select ALL the content from a page or a text
SHIFT + UP/DOWN : select very fast a lot of text letter by letter
CTRL + SHIFT + UP/DOWN : select very fast a lot of text word by word.
That's the big keyboard controls to select stuff.
Good luck!
