different shows?! It drives me NUTS!! I am going to buy a volume equalizer that will stop this, but I don't know what shows and advertisers hope to gain by PISSING PEOPLE OFF!!!/all new tvs should eliminate this #1 pet peeve of watchers everywhere!

It is incredibly annoying, you think with all the technology out there they could eliminate this simple annoyance.

Yes, really annoying. There's two ways to explain this. First the program you are listening may have variations in loudness to provide ambiance and mood, sometimes loud, sometimes quiet. Commercials on the other hand, want to draw your attention and be noted so they will have the sound be the loudest they can.
This is how free TV channels pay their expanses for airing their content. It's a needed annoyance, sadly.

I agree you use more batteries on the remote due to the volume turning it up and down all the time

I am annoyed at commercials in general. When one comes on, I always switch to another station until it's over.

I agree. It is very irritating that commercials are much louder than the program you are watching. I wish they would stop doing that!

Yes it is very annoying and intrusive. The only way to stop it is to stop buying the products they are offering.
