It was only until recently that BMW had more brake horsepower than Mercedes-Benz. That being said, the contest is much closer than it ever has been.
For a straight-line sprint (400m, 1320ft, 1/4 Mile) The race would be very close between a BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. It is my guess, though, that the Mercedes would win the straight sprint. This is due in part to the suspension calibration, BMW M is very, very stiff compared the AMG which is known for being softer, even with Air-suspension given the model.
Now, take both cars to the Nurburgring, the BMW will absolutely dominate. Why? Because of the suspension. BMW is known for its handling, the BMW will serious outpace the Mercedes-Benz competition. Of course, both companies have models that are tested at The Ring and the race could go either way. But, M5 versus E63. M5 wins.

That's a pretty general question, but The BMWs tend tp be a little lighter weight and get just a bit more hp per cc. Benzes go for quieter and more luxury with the performance.

Engine capacity or size is only partially responsible for how fast a car is. The transmission, and differential play a huge part. As well as the suspension (you don't want a car to squat too much).
it's impossible to answer that question. Too many other issues to consider.

It depends on the car's acceleration and how you drive it. They both have fast cars. Take the M line from BMW and AMG from Mercedes.
