goes on in the home. Spanking should not be your primary form of discipline for any child no matter their age. But an occasional swat on the seat of the problem does wonders. But the question is does the government have a right to decide what you do in the privacy of your home? Does the government have the right to say how you choose to discipline your child? Of course you do not have the right to beat your child senseless or to cause bodily injury these things are wrong and we all know this. But what about the occasional spanking, does the government have the right to say we may not spank or do they need to stay out of our homes.

Too much government....I am soooo sick of PC crap. I was raised in the 50's in a home with spanking where called for, and common sense prevailed. I think my parents' was the last generation to realize that we didn't need the government to tell us how to wipe our own @sses "correctly". I don't believe in, or support, or condone, child abuse in ANY form, but I also wonder what went so wrong when children can tell their parents to go f*%k themselves (literally and figuratively) and, if the parents don't tow the line, the kids will report them for "abuse". Huh?!?

Hell no they shouldn't have a say in spanking. Like anything in life, things needs to be done in moderation, and if it becomes excessive (ie you abuse your child) then yes, by all means the government and anyone else should be able to step in. However, if you spank your child once in awhile, and the worst mark on them is a little redness for a while, there is no harm, and I do believe it assists in making a better child.
I was always getting into trouble as a kid, but when I got spanked, I knew I really did wrong. And you know what? It rarely hurt, it was more embarrassment that I felt. Did I do what I did wrong ever again? Heck no! I knew the consequence if I did.

I was spanked as a kid. It was never done out of anger, and it was never done as a way to make a frustrated parent feel better. I think spanking should be reserved for times that the child has broken a rule he/she has known about deliberately. I also think a child should only be spanked when they understand why. Spanking a child younger than 3 seems silly to me...because they don't really have a concept of right and wrong. They're explorers designed to test boundaries at that age. The idea is to set the boundaries, and make sure your home is safe for exploration. As far as the governments influence in the home, I agree that having someone tell you how to run your life and family isn't appealing. However, boundaries are necessary this day and age...and with so many people doing horrid things, I suppose a level of control and a reminder of consequence is also necessary.

I'll never forget getting hit, especially all those times where it was taken too far. Its ****** me up pretty good. I'm an athletic guy who could probably hurt somebody if I had the ability to, but I can't. The idea of somebody hitting me still scares me to this day. Whenever I'm confronted with violence I can't do anything at all. Parents today don't have the patience to work with a child and opt to take the 'easy' way of discipline.

Really whats worse, a bratty kid who will grow out of his behavior or an adult who's scarred for life from the 'discipline' he received as a child.

Its one more thing the want to control. I personally believe society has gotten worse now that children know they can get away with whatever they want. I do not use spanking often we are more of a talking it through family but in certain situations we have spanked. I think if the gov continues ruling every aspect of life the constitution will be null and void. If they want to raise my children or dictate how i raise them they better start dishing out some $$$ to help with the upbringing.

The govt needs to stay out of it. They already are invading out space much more than they need to they already think they are all powerful enough without telling us what to do in our own home. I too used spanks as a last resort and only one swat. My child is 100% more loving and respectful of me than her friends whose parents don't know why their teens won't listen to them. Because they never had to as children. I think there is an age where spanking is no longer needed but don't think it should be against the law in our own home

We have spanked our kids for centuries. It's always worked well, and raised well adjusted kids. Then in the 70s suddenly we were supposed to be our kids best friend, instead of a parent, and we weren't supposed to touch them. Same with teachers and police - as a child, I used to have respect for my parents, teachers, and police. If a teacher swatted my behind and I complained to my father, he'd swat me too! All these authority figures worked to raise me together. Now kids don't respect anyone, and if any teacher or parent lays a finger on them, they scream blue murder. It's ridiculous. The government needs to leave parents and teachers to raise and educate kids so they become useful citizens.

Perfect example of too much government. There are laws that protect children in the case of extreme "discipline". So this California official obviously has too much time on his hands.

Because people like Oprah (childless) and Dr. Phil (perfect children) do not believe in spanking, we are supposed to go along with it. They say it hurts their little self esteem. I was spanked and my child is occasionally spanked and I have no problem with self esteem and neither does my child.

Don't you want to say sit down and shut up Hollywood?
