Yeah, I'm an aspiring gardener, and I was wondering if anyone knew what type of plants grew best in the northeast, or attracted hummingbirds or butterflies, or which are the most colorful, anything like that. The only reason I'm asking in January is that I want to be able to start right away when the growing season starts. Please help!

Hummingbirds love plants with tubular shaped flowers: columbine, weigela, four-o-clocks, etc. Each butterfly species has it's own favorites for laying eggs (so the emerging larval butterflies have their special food at the ready) such as anything in the milkweed family for monarchs, dill and fennel for swallowtails, etc. Favorite nectar plants for adult butterflies are asters, daisies, lantana, lilies, phlox, sedum, lavender, butterfly bush, etc. For both hummingbirds and butterflies, native plants are best because they are adapted to each other (hummingbirds and butterflies to pollinate the plants; the plants to feed the hummingbirds and butterflies.) Also, natives grow most easily, require less maintenance. One thing to keep in mind in trying to attract any kind of wildlife is to steer clear of pesticides. Even small amounts of pesticides will kill hummingbirds and butterflies.
