There would be billions of dollars in damage, that's for sure, and thousands of lives would be lost as well.
But the one major factor is how powerful would this earthquake be? Since NYC isn't on the west coast the buildings and skyscrapers aren't designed to withstand earthquakes so the damage to them would be massive as well and the quality of their designing would play a massive role in the damage afterwards, whether huge chunks of them fell off or if they collapsed all together.
