I think "vital national interests" commonly refers to oil and all the America haters we are breeding in Iraq.

Very Good Question! Nobody talks about them because they don't exist. But there are vital political interests, and vital business interests. Talking about them couldn't get enough people to support going to war. Hence the fiction about Saddam and terrorists. Sure Saddam was a tyrant and a threat to his own people, but he was clearly never a threat to us or any of the neighboring countries at the time we invaded. Fear is a much better motivator than logic here. You will get lots of neocon answers to your question, some long, some short, but all have only one essential argument, fear. If we really want to defeat the insurgents in Iraq, we will do the same thing the British did to defeat the IRA terrorists. What was their secret weapon? They left! And when they did, the insurgency no longer had any support, and the local people got rid of them. What will happen when we leave Iraq is that things will slowly get better, not worse, just as they did when we left Vietnam. There was no reason for us ever to be militarily involved in Vietnam or Iraq. Watch the responses to your questions, all ignorance and fear. And wanting us to go kick some butt, well wanting someone to go over and kick some butt, not the writers of course. Meanwhile another 24 Americans died today in Iraq, and Halliburton stock is up.

I shake my head when the war promoters say things like, "Well, if we leave, the region will fall into chaos!". I'm sorry, but, isn't it ALREADY in chaos? Then they say, "If we leave, the terrorists will follow us back to the US!". If the terrorists coming back here are such a threat, why haven't we captured/killed their leader(s) yet? Or spent the funds necessary to have a decent homeland security and strategic defense program? Why do we allow our Southern border to remain virtually wide open, allowing millions of undocumented people to enter without impunity? Are our elected officials so stupid as to think that there aren't terrorists among the illegal aliens flooding through? They say, "If we leave, the region and government will disintegrate!" WHAT THE HELL HAVE WE BEEN DOING THERE FOR FOUR YEARS?!? Other than racking up over 3,000 dead soldiers and over 30,000 permanently maimed brave Americans? I don't get it. I can't help but think it is all about the money, as most everything these days is. I have never been so cynical in my entire life as I have become since Bush took office. Nothing makes sense anymore.

you're correct, that pastime become executed. Now there's a clean pastime. Osama has been marginalized. Iran and No. Korea are our greatest problem. And we are their greatest challenge. Iran is conscious that they could't proceed to construct their nuclear guns if Iraq is a specialist-American democracy. that is why they are operating so demanding to cajole us to go away. They recruit determined human beings (there are a lot contained in the middle East) to blow up some marketplace or police station because they recognize it is going to play on American television. It serves no purpose. They income no military or economic take advantage of this. yet they are hoping to cajole you that they could out live us. that is a classic "approach of exhaustion" as postulated by technique of Mao Zedong. If we go away now, we are able to make the international a extra risky position. Iraq heavily isn't professional-American. Nor will they probable proceed to be a democracy. we are able to have wasted perchance the most acceptable probability to stay sparkling of a disastrous conflict with a nuclear armed opponent. Superpolitics - you write too a lot and say no longer some thing. My brothers in hands were being shot at by technique of Saddam's military in violation of the quit-fireplace, Saddam did have WMDs although no longer many, Saddam become coming up shipping structures for WMDs in violation of global regulation. P.S. there is not any "regulation" adverse to a sovereign usa attacking yet another sovereign usa for any reason.

Great question.
Iraq would probably fall apart into chaos and open civil war if we pulled out now. However, the same thing will happen when we pull out later. The main difference will be how many more American soldiers die, how many more angry America-hating terrorists we create, and how much worse our diplomatic position in the world becomes before we finally withdraw.
Bush and the GOP have screwed things up so badly, there is nothing in Iraq that we can "win". All we can do is keep a tenous lid on the chaos and continue to hemorrage blood and money we don't have (BORROW MORE FROM CHINA) on a lost cause.
Two out of three Americans realize these facts, but apparently we don't live in a democracy.

Bush has been reminding us all of the US vital interests in Iraq for years now, just like Clinton did when he made regime change in Iraq Clinton's own policy. Liberals choose not to listen when Bush speaks because they hate Bush so much they do not want to admit that if we leave Iraq before the Iraqis are able to defend themselves from the terrorists who are coming to Iraq then it will once again be a terrorist state like it was under Saddam. There is still a big hole in New York where the World Trade Center once stood.
If we leave Iraq now, the people who put that big hole in New York will be able to use Iraqi oil money to finance more attacks in America.
How many Americans have to be killed before liberals wake up to the threat islamofascists pose to our freedom, and our lives? How many holes do liberals want to see in American cities?

Bush is a jackass.
That's about the only vital national interest I could come up with that would prevent troops from deploying Iraq.

Before I answer, I have to say that I have NEVER agreed with anything you allude to, but it's so much fun answering your questions I can't help myself....
As far as our national interests, the fact that an implosion of Iraq will only breed more terrorists and kill more Iraqis keeps us here.
Iraq has been a haven for Al-Qaida and is now a breeding ground for the likes of Hezbullah and other Shiite militias. If the US leaves while there is still instability, we will suffer in the long run and will probably have to return in a few years, anyway.
I would rather finish this now and get it over with.

The permanent bases in Iraq are the first staging grounds for the US invasion of Iran. Haven't you been paying attention? The run-up and propaganda flooding is the same as pre-Iraq, and yet they still think people are dumb enough to fall for their BS. To hell with this administration, they're all fired.
