My question may sound awfully bigoted, but having worked my socks off to provide myself and my family with 'the pleasures in life', as did my parents before me, why should i tolerate witnessing a low life, lazy wretch, trying to sponge off innocent passers-by. O.k, some of them may have problems. But as my gran used to say, "pull your socks up. Pull em up till your toes bleed". And i did. And quite honestly, so should they.

At least the 'lazy wretch' as you put it is trying to make the best of a bad job and not spend all day sat on a bench with a can of Tennants (or worse) by his side. Every journey starts with the first step. Just be glad you are not him and you have the nice things in life. Why not buy a copy of the magazine and help him get where you appear to be today instead of moaning

There have been days when I've bought a copy because I needed to see a kind face and have a thirty second conversation with someone real. Just enough to keep me sane before I head off onto pavements crowded with rude arrogant self-righteous idiots like you.
The Big Issue folk might be homeless, but they're doing more to earn their keep than inconsiderate corporate drones.

these guy's are working, they are selling a magazine, it's not begging, it's earning (it even says it on their jackets) and they're homeless. Ever tried getting a job without an address, a bank account, national insurance number or the right clothes to come to work and no access to running water to turn up to work looking presentable? It doesn't happen.

I admire these people standing on the street corners trying to make a living from selling the 'Big Issue.' At least they are trying.

and came home to your nice warm house and switched on your uptodate computer to tell us all that you feel superior to him?
i appreciate your views and can understand what you are saying, though some of those people have Big Issues of their own and have been so diluted and disillusioned by "the system" that they find it hard to be motivated. At least you have your gran to thank for the success you are making of your life.

Graham , count your blessings. Don't even judge these people unless you have walked in their shoes. The fact that they go out to sell these mags is a start hopefully to a better life. Shame on you!

I suggest you read this:
http://www.bigissue.com/bigissue.html
The people who sell the big issue are trying to "pull their socks up" as your gran put it, often without any immediate family to help them (like you had?).
You might not like what you see but they are trying to make an honest living; better that than begging, being criminals/pickpockets.......

Totally agree, same goes for the lazy scrounging bastads who are too bone-idle to work, and live off every other mug's hard earned cash.
I wouldn't give them the skin off my sh it
