My teacher reccomended I publish and copyright a book of poems rather than publishing and copyrighting each one. About how much would that cost? Thanks!

Rawson(?) made a good point, but I meant actual copyrighting (©)

If you are looking to publish yourself, I would suggest taking a look at http://www.lulu.com for a great self-publishing company. They charge no set-up fees and it is a POD service (meaning they print copies as they are ordered, so you can buy as many or as few as you would like). The cost is per book, and their prices are very reasonable. Check out their FAQs for specifics. I have had fantastic experiences with them, and you can buy very affordable marketing packages to give your book an ISBN and even place it in online book stores like Amazon.

If you are interested in traditional publishing, take a look at the books "Writer's Market" and "The Guide to Literary Agents". In this route, you would not need to worry about copyright at all because that would be taken care of by the publisher.

Good luck!

Thissilen:
If you self publish there are lots of self publishing companies on the web. They will look after getting your isbn # and such if you hire one of them to do your book. I wrote two books and it was costly. I have found my third publisher to be the best in cost and quality. If I put their name in here they say I'm advertising and close me down.
I make nothing by telling you who they are, just want to help other writers. If you wish the name email me at barwaynerus@yahoo.com and I will let you know. They are the only self publishing company I know that do not charge a set up fee which can be on average $2,100.00 They only charge per book. Also most charge per page. I made my own front and back covers which saves $$ as well. Good luck and hope this helps

If you want to make any money off of it, you have to contact a literary agent.
Copywriting something is not really that hard. Just seal it in an envelope and send it to yourself by registered mail. The receipt from the post office (a US government body) is proof of the date the contents were sealed. If anyone tries to infringe on your work, take them to court with the sealed envelope. This will prove that you are the original author.
