i understand what ur saying
apart from the fact that no one likes rude students, there is also the fact that these teachers grew up in a time when students would all respect their teachers --- that 'guru shishya parampara' thing. the teach knew everything. students didn't have too many sources of info. so the teacher was the #1 source
but today, students know more. and the bond between teacher and student has been.... let's say, "westernised"
so due to this clash of thoughts (teachers want power like their teachers had vs. students want freedom and have lots of info at hand), it seems to us (and all) teachers have become more authoritative, and students more rude and irrational
it'll take a few generations b4 this scenario disappears (and maybe it even won't!)

What are the mistakes and why was it so important for the student to point it out? Many students in high school and junior college are of the opinion that no adult could possibly know anything and tend to see a mistake in speech etc as an opportunity to demonstrate how they don't need to be taught. If the mistake is mentioned in a respectful manner and not shouted triumphantly in an attempt to discredit or make fun of the teacher the teacher's response changes. You can only be tested, challenged and tormented for so long without becoming a little jaded. Give them a break, they are just trying to get through the day and maybe teach something.

I tried being polite in my first year of teaching, and it only led to a difficult year. I suppose students haven't changed much over the past 15 years since I was in elementary school, but I realize now how important it is to command the classroom environment so things can get done in there. As someone else commented already, showing the teacher up in class in an abrasive and definat manner will only lead to further instances and a decreasing level of behavior if the teacher is soft.

Teachers are allowed to make mistakes, but at the same I agree that if teachers knew how to handle the situation, the students and teachers can work together and appreciate each other too.

Several factors come into play:
1. Was it an important mistake or did the teacher make a typo?
2. Did the student interrupt the flow of a lesson or wait until an appropriate time.
3. Was the student respectful?

I'm a teacher and I expect students to correct me. Sometimes I'm writing while I'm talking, and I'm not that coordinated. But if they point out trivial details while we're in the midde of something, it is very distracting to me and to the other students. It interrupts the train of thought. Then I'm not too pleased with the interruption, but I'm still polite.

I didn't go to college, but my experience at high school, some teachers like to show thier authority, who's boss. Where I went to school, it usually was students with a learning disability or something, but not all teachers were that way. In high school, I had a teacher that told me that I'd never be able to get my ham (amateur) radio license, I have my license. Some can be snobbish, have thier "picks". And yes, some don't like it if they're mistakes are pointed out, unless it's in thier favor.

Teachers adjust their styles according to the type of students they have. Perhaps there are some of your classmates who need a firm hand. The teacher, however; can be firm without being rude. A good teacher will always be open to suggestions and the recognition of her mistakes. No one is perfect - even the most brilliant of teachers.

Many times teachers are afraid of students. There just isn't the respect for teachers that there used to be. By being authoritative, they are trying to keep control of their class. As for a student pointing out a possible mistake, I personally would prefer if a student pulled me aside and told me, rather than scream it out, and make a loud embarrassing scene.

For whatever reason, trying to be polite and reason with a class only leads to worse behavior - the teacher is seen as a pushover.
