Message from a Yank to a Brit?
I'll be straight to the point. America and the United Kingdom are the best of friends and each others greatest allies. Our similarities and the common ground we share far out weighs our differences.
We have always been there for each other ( although sometimes late in coming) and need to maintain our "special relationship". And make no mistake, our relationship is special - but that’s a topic for another time. Anyway, what I see going on between our two countries is just terrible. There is still great love and admiration felt both ways by many of us, but clearly there is a growing divide between our nations. The comments on yahoo answers - which should be taken with a grain of salt - are still disturbing and are very destructive. COMMENTS FROM BOTH US/UK
Bottom line, the hate filled messages we send to one another on here MUST stop.( I admit I too have been guilty of this, but have seen the error of my ways – yes that sounds corny, but I mean it.) There is nothing wrong with disagreeing and debate, but needs to be handled maturely. Why don’t we try using “constructive criticism” rather than personal attacks – which quite frankly are usually off base – and try to objectively examine things as if we were in one another shoes. Never forget we are far more alike than we are different.!

If America and Britain cannot get along, there is no hope for the world.
What say you? How do you feel?

I agree, I'll join your movement.

On the whole, I agree and constructive criticism is the way forward, but I disagree that there's no hope for the world if we can't get along - the world will be fine. Empire's always end, it'd just result in an unprecedented change in our lifestyles that we, individually may or may not survive.

Also, I have to say that I'm more and more of the opinion that the British have more in common with other Europeans than North Americans.

About the way people are slating each-others countries on Yahoo, I have to say that I think George W Bush has done more damage to the worlds perception of your country than anything else. The world hates him and with good reason.

I think its more the distate we have for president Bush(but thats another story). When he goes, Im sure the divide will start to heal. Its a bit like, when you are in Primary school, your school will always be in competition with those close by. Really we should have grown out of this by now, but as you know, many havn't. Im glad you made the first step, how nice of you is that? Its the pre/mis conceptions that we have of each other that do it, such as Americans are all vain and loud and People in Britain are pompous and have bad teeth etc. It has always been there, it has just worsened since all the terror attacks, wars and Bush. Hopefully it will all die down and then we can repair ourselves and all the divides that have been caused by a number of sources and people.

Thank you friend/mate lol.

I'm a Brit.I agree whole heartedly. I know which nation I would rather stand shoulder to shoulder with in a time of crisis.
My best friend for over 40 years is American.... she is an absolute gem.

I don't think the banter on here has much effect on real life. Let people get things off their chest in a neutral environment where people can weigh in from all sides with different perspectives.

There are small minded idiots on both sides of the pond. I suspect that this answer will be reported by one of the afore mentioned bigots, on the grounds that it is insulting others.

I'm not anti-American. I'm anti-Bush and the policies his regime have implemented.

I suspect many people's perceived anti-Americanism has a similar cause.

Maybe in 2008 there will be a more general feeling of goodwill. The next president has a big mess to sort out, thanks to the current one.
